Welcome to the Grenfell Public School 2009 Website

We hope that you find this site useful. We hope you enjoy reading and looking at the work that is being produced. Over the year we intend to display work by as many of the students as we can.

Also the weekly Emu Creek Echo Newsletter and Term Calendar will be available for you to read and download. Included in the Links page will be links to great educational sites.

We would appreciate your feedback and any suggestions on how we can improve the website. The site is for you to stay informed about our school, its activities and learn more about how we are providing quality education for your child.

Grenfell Public School is an exciting place to learn.

Our School

With the latest technology available, students are experiencing a variety of hands-on and engaging lessons that cater for different learning styles and needs.

Students are given many opportunities to represent their school and showcase their achievements. Weekly assemblies, Aussie of the Month and a variety of sporting and academic awards are celebrate throughout the school year.

Community involvement is also very important to Grenfell Public School. The Senior Citizens Concert, Henry Lawson Festival and the Grenfell Show keep the students very busy supporting these local events.

School History

Gold was discovered on Brundah run near Emu Creek in 1866 by Cornelius O'Brien, a shepherd employed by John Wood. The goldfield town that sprang up overnight was firstly named Emu Creek, then later Grenfell.

In 1867 there were two special births in Grenfell. The first of these was the birth of the Grenfell Public School; the second, the birth of Henry Lawson.

By 1867 Grenfell's goldfields were all but finished. The town however, and Grenfell Public School, prospered.

The school was originally located at the corner of Camp and Forbes Streets in 1867. A plaque marks this location. Due to accommodation inadequacies the school was relocated to the site in Rose and Weddin Streets, a location it occupied for 97 years. The Community Arts Centre and Grenfell TAFE College occupy this site now.

In 1889 the status of the school was changed from a Public School to a Superior Public School. Years later, in 1928, the school's status was raised to that of a District School.

In 1930 the school's status was raised yet again but this time to that of an Intermediate High School, with classes from Kindergarten to the Intermediate Certificate and much later, classes to the Leaving Certificate. The big change came, however, thirty years later in 1965 when the Intermediate High School status was changed to a reconstituted "Grenfell Public School" and a separate "The Henry Lawson High School".

Between 1964 and 1968 the Grenfell Public School's present site was occupied with the buildings as we know them today. The High School moved to his present location in 1973. The Grenfell Public School has a proud tradition, celebrating over 127 years of public education.
